MP to hold emergency meeting as hundreds of local jobs are at risk

Weaver Vale MP, Graham Evans is to hold an emergency meeting tomorrow (17th June) with business and trade union representatives, after workers at a B&Q distribution centre at Preston Brook were informed that their jobs were at risk of redundancy.

Workers have been informed that following a review of the logistics network, B&Q plan to withdraw all operations from the site at Preston Brook by January 2012. The announcement looks likely affect 621 local employees.

Graham said “This potentially is a really big blow for the area. I have arranged this emergency meeting, so that we can act fast to do all we can to save local jobs.”

The meeting, to be held in Westminster, will be between Graham Evans MP, DHL (who operate the distribution centre for B&Q), trade union representatives from Usdaw, and Widnes MP Derek Twigg (Labour).

Graham commented “I am pleased that Derek is also able to attend this meeting. When local jobs are under threat, I think it is important that we put aside party politics and work together for the good of the area.”
